Jonathan Bloom is very passionate about the problems overconsumption and waste of food in the U.S. and the world cause. To read the article follow the link: http://articles.latimes.com/2010/nov/07/opinion/la-oe-bloom-food-waste-20101107. He dedicates himself to informing people about the difference one person can make and the change it can bring. He persuades us with statistics like:
- about 40% of food produced in the U.S. is not consumed
- everyday the amt. of food wasted could fill the Rose Bowl
- the average family of four, conservatively, throws out an estimated $1,350 annually and,
- cutting the above amt. of waste in half and giving the money to charity could provide about 700 meals
The voice he uses talks to the reader. He never accuses the reader of wasting, however, he effectively informs while motivating him or her to self-examine his or her habits. His prior research and knowledge give the reader concrete substance and facts to go by. This helps to convince his point. Personally I was inspired to cut back on my consumption and practice more efficient ways of using food.
